S46 – Lagoon Fjallsárlón *

A refuge for drifting icebergs
How to get there
Distance from Hali country hotel ~ 25 km (15 mi)
Travel time ~ 20 minutes

From the Hali hotel, take Route 1 and head west, then turn to Fjallsárlón road. In 1 km (0.6 mi), you'll see a parking lot.
The Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon is located in the southern part of the Vatnajökull Glacier. Icebergs drift in the water and, and when colliding with each other, make sounds similar to groans. The lagoon's surface area is 4 sq km (1.5 sq mi). Fjallsárlón is located only 10 km (6.2 mi) from Jökulsárlón. It is not as famous and picturesque as the latter, hence – fewer tourists. The glacier calving into the lagoon is a part of Vatnajökull National Park.

Above the lagoon, there is the famous volcano Öræfajökull. In summer, the average air temperature is 10-13 °C (50-55 F), and in winter it drops to 0 °C (32 F). If the temperature drops below, the lagoon gets completely covered with ice.

There is a cafe near the lagoon where you can rest and eat.
photography recommendations
In summer, you can go boating and take pictures of beautiful icebergs nearby. You can also photograph skúas and big seagulls who nest on the rocky coast.

Walk along the coast. Take pictures of icebergs in front of the volcano. In the golden hour, the setting sun paints the sparkling ice floes in soft pink tones.
