08 - Lago di Limides **

A nice forrest lake
HOW TO GET THERE
32043, Lago di Limides, Cortina d'Ampezzo,
Province of Belluno, Italy

Distance from Cortina d'Ampezzo ~ 16 km (~10 mi)
Travel time ~20 min

Lago di Limides will be on your way to another picturesque photo point, Passo Falzarego.

From Cortina d'Ampezzo, head west on SS51/S48, turn right onto Via Cesare Battisti/SR48 (signs for SS51/Dobbiaco), and at the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto SR48, follow SR48 for another 15 km (~9 mi) to arrive at the destination.

There is a parking lot where you can drop off your car before hitting the trail up the mountain southward for approximately 40 minutes before reaching your destination.
Lago di Limides is neatly located between two mountain peaks, Sass de Stria and Cinque Torri, south-east of the Falzarego pass and north of Mt.Croda Negra.

The origin of the name "Limides" is not clear -- it's been lost in the myths and fables surrounding the Dolomites. The lake is believed to be protected by the mountains of Sasso di Stria, the Lagazuoi and the Tofana di Rozes. Mount Averau reflects in its waters.

Because of the glacial origin, the lake is too cold to host living organisms.
PHOTOGRAPHY RECOMMENDATIONS
You have to hike up a little (approximately 30-40 min) up a very picturesque road which goes through the forest. Follow the signs for Lago di Limides.

Because of its naturally strategic location, the colors and ambiance of the lake change throughout the day giving the place its iridescence and unique atmosphere that carries onto the photograph almost intact.

The peculiar nature of the lake with its almost phantasmagorical ability to dry up if there's been not enough atmospheric precipitation makes the lake worth visiting during rainy season, namely late September - mid October, where you can catch the beautiful reflection of the nearby mountains Averau, Sasso di Stria, Lagazuoi, and Tofana di Rozes. Particularly the latter, since Tofana mountain reflects quite photogenically upon the lake (provided you catch it at the right time). There are two photo points on the map I drew above -- each of which provides a scenic view to the mountains above. Aim at shooting north-east.

Hiking up the mountain, there are some perfect views -- approximately 100 meters (~320 ft) before the lake, there's a gorgeous photo point from which you can shoot a sunset panorama. Basically, this is a sunset photo location.

In case you own a drone, you can take gorgeous pics from above as well and travel all the way down the valley.
